The Lost Seas
The Altar Skulkers are a slave tribe that lives in the southern Altaruk mountain range along the forbidden approach to the Dragon’s Altar. Composed entirely of slaves who have escaped from the column of levies over the years, the Altar Skulkers are organized into several clans. Blending into the hills with their red-clay cloaks and wielding crude bone javelins and obsidian daggers, the Altar Skulkers scratch out a meager existence in the red hills and live for each year’s levy, when they can visit their rage and hatred upon the soldiers escorting slaves to meet their fate at the Altar. Freeing a goodly amount of slaves might spur the Dragon to take the balance from the soldiers; freeing even more might enrage the Dragon and send him to lay waste to the sponsoring city-state (perhaps this was responsible for the doom visited upon Balic in the Year of Friend’s Fury). For centuries or perhaps even millennia, the Altar Skulkers have plagued the soldiers, given rise to tales of haunting souls in the hills, and absorbed escaped slaves into their numbers.
The Altar Skulkers have a curious gaunt, pale, drained appearance. In combat, the necrotic aura they emanate (a result of years spent living in the shadow of the Dragon’s Altar) drains life from their friends and foes alike. They are able to cow baazrags into fighting for them in no small part due to this affiliation with defiler magic.
The Deadstone clan is led by Joaquim. Recently devastated when 31 of its number were killed by a joint force of the Zatla Cowboys and the Red Chord, the clan eventually joined forces with the Zatla Cowboys and carried out an epic harrying of the column of Night Runner elves and slaver mercenaries.
